We all have “a fork in the road” moment. It’s when we are confronted with making a life changing decision. Mine came in 2011. A good friend’s mother had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. My friend commissioned me to make a special piece of jewelry for her. Together we designed a pendant design. As I worked in my studio on her piece I thought of all the things this piece symbolized. It became much more than just a fork made into jewelry.
I am a silversmith. I create contemporary jewelry from vintage dinner forks. Creating something for my friend’s mother lead to the realization that using a fork for this jewelry symbolized her fork in the road. For my friend’s mother, as well as for all those diagnosed with cancer, my jewelry is a tangible symbol of their fork in the road. But it symbolizes so much more. What about those who’ve lost a job, a relationship or a loved one? Each of these challenges are very personal and important. A piece of jewelry can be a reminder of hope, comfort or inspiration.
